Ride & Coast

After an early breakfast, transfer to Nairobi's local Wilson Airport.

Fly scheduled flight to Loisaba airstrip. Met on arrival by a Sosian guide, and transferred to the lodge, arriving in time for lunch.

Sosian offers a huge range of experiences including walking, camel safaris, game-drives, night drives, fishing, tennis, cattle ranching, kayaking and swimming in the waterfalls behind the ranch house.

Exploring this area from horseback is an unbeatable way to experience this vast wilderness area, and this will be your main form of transport for the next week!

After lunch by the pool and some time to relax and refresh yourselves, you will head to the stable yard to meet your horses and have an evening ride with your guide.

Return to the lodge, in time for a drink and dinner.

Your days are tailored to you, but an early morning ride to a bush brunch will not disappoint.

Whilst the horses cool off under an Acacia tree you can enjoy delicious home cooked food to fuel you until your next meal!

Sosian is blessed with large numbers of elephant, as well as buffalo, hippo, giraffe, zebra, many antelope, plus all of the big cats. Leopard and lion sightings are regular and Sosian has also become known for its healthy populations of the endangered wild dog with excellent viewing opportunities - riding with wild dog is a rare and exciting privilege for those lucky enough to experience it.

After an early lunch, we will head off on the horses, whom you have now become familiar with, heading north towards our basic fly camp for the night.

Riding south to north you will traverse a varied cross section of landscapes and habitats of Sosian, ending up on the vast open plains so characteristic of East Africa.

Your camp will be ready for you with cold drinks and hot bush showers, and a 3-course dinner under the stars, whilst the horses are secured for the night on the picket line close to camp. This will be your most basic accommodation over the week and a truly magical experience of simple comforts under canvas, reminiscent of a bygone era.

Waking up with the sun and a hot cup of tea or coffee, you will get ready to ride off in an easterly direction, stopping for breakfast under a shady tree.

As you continue to ride down into the valley, you will meet the Ewaso Narok River and follow its winding path until, we reach Suyian Soul, Laikipia’s ultimate ‘eco camp’.

Suyian Soul is a simple, earthy camp set in a scenic paradise next to a natural spring and salt lick. The camp is owned and run by Anne Powys, whose family have been cattle ranchers in this area for nearly 100 years. Anne is also Kenya’s number one botanist and a fascinating raconteur.

After lunch we head out on foot with Anne and her guides, learning about the medicinal qualities of many plants and how they are used by the local tribes-people. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the best and one that we highly recommend!

Leaving after breakfast, we will spend a full morning exploring Suyian by horseback. It is a stunning conservancy with dramatic escarpments, hidden valleys and expansive grasslands.

Suyian offers some stunning riding country. Elephant, reticulated giraffe, ostrich, hippo, zebra, buffalo, lion and leopard, among other species are prevalent, plus large herds of oryx, eland and gazelle can be seen on the plains.

With good opportunity for long canters across the plains and jumping any obstacles along the way this is a super morning of riding. As we head back towards the Ewaso Nyiro River we cross onto Ol Donyo Lemboro Ranch and reach Laikipia Wilderness Camp in time for lunch.

After lunch and an optional siesta, we can head out into the bush for a game drive and / or a walk. This area is good for tracking wild dog and such encounters on foot, are an exhilarating and thrilling experience not to be missed.

This morning we head off early again, into the beautiful and unexplored Mutara Valley. Winding our way through this ‘Garden of Eden’, following the seasonal river bed we’re likely to come across giraffe, elephant, eland and buffalo amongst others. Under the shade of a large Acacia tree, with plenty of fresh water for the horses, we’ll stop for a bush breakfast.

After breakfast, this is our last leg of the journey riding past seasonal marshlands and back to Sosian in time for a well-deserved lunch by the pool and an afternoon to relax and refresh!

Today is entirely flexible to do as you wish. For those who wish to ride again, a morning out riding around the cross-country course is a lot of fun or if the dams are full enough, swimming with the horses is also great fun. Jumping off waterfalls, kayaking, cattle ranching, or simply taking it all in and relaxing by the pool, you can fill your day as much or as little as you want!

After breakfast, transfer to Loisaba Airstrip.

Fly scheduled flight to Nairobi's Wilson Airport and connect onto a further scheduled flight to Ukunda Airport.

Met on arrival by a Kinondo Kwetu representative, and transferred to the resort.

Kinondo Kwetu - “Home away from Home” - a place to totally wind down, where you are completely content in doing nothing at all – but with the option to do a lot if you want. Set at the far end of the remote Galu Beach - a beautiful stretch of brilliant white sand, lined with palm trees and sparkling turquoise waters.

After a leisurely morning and early lunch, transfer back to Ukunda Airport.

Fly scheduled flight to Nairobi's Wilson Airport.

Met on arrival and transferred to Jomo Kenyatta international airport, in time to check in for your international flight home.
